We set off fairly early at about 08:30 on our longish drive to Hanmer Springs. Allowing for the mandatory coffee stop and a camper van which is hardly a Ferrari we estimated 5 1/2 hours . What drive it was. The sky was cloudless, brilliantly blue and the road was quiet, well marked and just easy. The scenery was fantastic. Whilst we have driven this road at least twice before it was seen in a completely new light today and the ever changing scenery was just lovely. The variety is difficult to describe but majestic mountains, rugged moorland, crystal clear rivers and verdant pastures may go some may to describe what we drove through.
Coffee, and two cakes as decreed by the LLW, at Murchison, was a stop just over 1/3 of the way and the cafe was lovely, service very friendly and we sat out in the warm sunshine.
We arrived pretty much on plan and sorted ourselves out at the very nice camp site. Later on the weather forecast was saying it was 20/21C whilst to us and just about everyone one else around the camp site it felt like 30C plus. This southern hemisphere sun is something else.
Hanmer Springs looks very different to our last visit. The spa and thermal spring resort is high in the mountains and two year ago the surrounding mountains were capped with snow. This time no sign of the white stuff and all the locals are complaining about the heat. Off on a bike ride through Hanmer forest and a couple of wrong turns meant some fairly tough off road stuff. We survived and the ride through the forest was delightful offering some very welcome shade. An emergency stop was required at Four Square on the way back, since our wine cellar was apparently bare.
The LLW conjured up a wonderful chicken vindaloo with peppers, beans and rice which we enjoyed, much to the envy of our fellow campers, sitting outside under the camper van's awning.
