Sunday 13th on the ferry to the South Island

We were up bright and early to catch the 09:00 and arrived at 07:45 (15 mins before the required time) to find huge queues and the holding area where vehicles park before boarding to be looking very full already. Checking in was slow but we eventually got through and were the last but 4 vehicles to board the ferry. It was clearly going to be very busy and as soon as we were on board this was confirmed. However, we eventually found two seats next to a table of 4 Scandinavian girls who spent the whole journey communicating with one another via Facebook.

The sea was calm but the wind strong so the outside viewing gallery was closed. We were not too bothered about that because we have seen the entry to the Marlborough Sounds on a few occasions now and secondly, we did not want to lose our seats.

Coffees were sorted and we settled down for the 3 hour journey. On her way back from a wander around Rosemary bumped in to Ruth, Anne Dixon's sister, along with her partner John. We knew that they were in NZ at the same time as us but meeting on the ferry was a real coincidence. We chatted for a while and discovered that they will be in Wanaka for some of the time that we are there so we will meet up again. They were staying overnight in Picton where the ferry lands on the South Island, whereas we were travelling to Nelson some 2 hours away.

The drive to Nelson was easy and we were pleasantly surprised to find some new woads which made some go the mountainous roads much easier.

We found the camp site quickly and the LLW started bombarding her men with emails and documents and probably more data passed through the camp site's WiFi that they have seen for the past year.

Ray went off for a ride into the city and the along the river which was very good.
Shortly after returning, the BBQ came out and we had an excellent dinner which was just completed before the rain started. It rained quite heavily for a lot of the night but did not bother us in our cosy camper van.
