Saturday 12th Eastbourne and the Hutt Valley

Fairly cloudy but warm today and as the day went on we had more and more sunshine. First stop was Countdown as the LLW had determined that our supplies were perilously low. We had obviously hit prime shopping time as it was heaving and hardly a space to be had in the car park. In spite of this we completed our shopping quickly and as we eyed various busy check outs one of the supervisors rushed across and very cheerfully checked us through the self check outs at lightning speed. What great service.

Off then for a short drive to Eastbourne, which is on the opposite side of the harbour to Wellington, the we had a short walk along the sea front and then found the necessary coffee shop.

Back to the camp site and since the LLW had to catch up on some work, Ray went off on a cycle ride up the Hutt Valley from Lower Hutt where the Hutt river enters Wellington Harbour to close to Upper Hutt. It was a lovely ride and gently uphill for the first half but with a strengthening wind as the valley narrowed and now with unrelenting sunshine. Time to turn back as the sun won again and of course downhill and downwind it was a doddle.

There were some great views of the harbour as I approached the mouth of the Hutt river.

We have enjoyed Wellington city and the surroundings much more that the last time we visited some 10 years ago. The city is very buzzy and seems to be a great place to live. Lots of entertainment, good restaurants and all in a lovely setting by the sea.

Tomorrow we need to be up bright and early to catch the ferry to Picton on the South Island. We have had a great time all over the North Island and are sad to leave.
