Saturday 5th January- on to Lake Taupo

Some cloud this morning as we left Rotorua, having thoroughly enjoyed our stay there, and once more headed south towards our next stop at Lake Taupo. Shortly after leaving the urban area of Rotorua we started to encounter numerous thermal areas, many of which are now being harnessed to deliver thermal energy. This seems to have expanded greatly since our last visit and I s clealr a major industry now. By now the cloud had cleared and normal sunny service was resumed. We planned a brief stop in Taupo town to replenish the food store, refill the camper van with diesel ( very important since after 2 days here we have a long drive south to Otaki and from previous experience we know that diesel stops are few and far between) and supply the LLW with the mandatory flat white. It was very busy and having accomplished the first two we decided to drive along the lake to find a coffee stop as it was clear that parking in Taupo would not be easy.

We soon found a delightful cafe by a sailing school and sat outside admiring the view and enjoying the coffee and cakes.

On then to our campsite which is situated right on the lake some 17 miles from Taupo. The view from our camper van is great and soon we were swimming in the very clear lake along with black swans, cormorants and numerous ducks.

It was a lovely sunny evening as we sat by the lake for our dinner - what a setting!
