Friday 4th January - in Rotorua

Today promises to be very hot and the lady at reception is forecasting 30C which apparently has not been experienced in Rotorua for several years. An interesting request has come in from Jon Gilbert, the Head Teacher at Amberley School. We are planning to install solar panels on the school roof and Jon has forwarded a Letter of Intent document to sign and return. Now all I have to do is find somewhere to print the doc, sign it then scan and return! We will sort it.

We decided to explore the lakes just south of Rotorua, Lakes Tarawera, Tikitapu (the blue lake) and Rotokakalu (the green lake). In today's brilliant sunshine the lakes were stunning, at Tikitapu and Tarawera lots of people were enjoying boating and swimming, whilst Rotokakalu is owned by a Maori tribe, it is regarded as a sacred lake and no swimming or boating is allowed.

A lookout between Tikitapu and Rotokakalu provided fantastic views across both lakes and hopefully you can just about identify the blue (photos 1&2 below) and green lakes (photo 3). The hills around the lakes are carpeted with Tree Ferns and the vegetation is incredibly dense. Every time we come to this part of NZ we both say that almost anything will grow in this climate.

The photo below is of Tarawera which is by far the largest of these lakes and has a couple of small resorts which are popular for boating and swimming

On our way back we stopped at our trusty camper van parking area in Rotorua and had another cycle along the lake shore and through the gardens, including the rose garden which is looking particularly good this year. It was a fairly short ride, not because we were tired but because the sun was so fierce.

Back to the camp site and the school documents had been successfully dealt with and emailed back to Amberley. Time now for the BBQ with lamb and sausages on the agenda. The camper van was perfectly positioned to benefit from the shade of a few high trees.

Tomorrow we are off to Lake Taupo where we will stay for 2 days, then heading south via the west coast and Martinborough to Wellington were the LLW is planning to meet someone, at a Wellington Law Form, that she has recently worked with.
