We were sad to leave Curio and Porpoise Bays but given the weather it was not the greatest place to stay for long as there were very few facilities. I forgot to mention in yesterday's post that the Lonely Planet entry for the excellent Beach Cafe did say that when the sun shone and the warm wind blew in from the sea then their terrace was an excellent place to be. They then added "for the remaining 90% of the time just enjoy the view from inside the restaurant"! A further clue to the climate in the area was revealed when we drove by the Catlins Rain Forest Reserve.
In spite of the weather it was a great drive to Dunedin and we stopped at a number of viewpoints, all of which offered great views.
We arrived in Dunedin about lunchtime and having checked into our camp site we set off to explore the town which was fairly deserted since 2nd January is a public holiday. Being very Scottish (they even have a statue of Rabbie Burns in the Octagon) I suspect they were still suffering from hangovers after Hogmanay
Dunedin railway station is apparently the most photographed building in NZ so here is another photo of it! After wandering round the town for a while we found a good restaurant, The Reef for a very pleasant fish dinner.
