Friday 11th January - along Marlborough Sounds

As  mentioned yesterday the weather cleared during the evening and we woke to brilliant sunshine and clear skies. We had decided to stay Friday evening in Picton as our schedule told us we had to be at the port at 08:00 for a 09:00 ferry to Wellington on Saturday morning.

However, the weather was so good that we could not resist the temptation for a swim so we headed back to Kaiteriteri and found that quite a lot of other people had the same idea. It was great and we thoroughly enjoyed the swim.

On then to Nelson where we had decided to stop for a lunch and found a very nice new bar/restaurant down by the harbour where we were served by a young lad from South Shields!  An excellent seafood chowder and smoked salmon Caesars salad.

Around Nelson the flowers and trees were magnificent and we saw Jacarandas in number for the first time on this trip.

After Nelson we climbed over some steep hills on the 6 then drove along the Queen Charlotte Drive which hugs the coast from Havelock and is spectacularly beautiful. We had driven this road on our last trip, in the other direction and in grey, cloudy weather so today was a revelation as vista after vista emerged with sparkling blue sea and dense green vegetation tumbling right down to the water’s edge. Awesome!

The tree ferns were amazing and the lovely lady wife decreed that another photo of them was necessary so here it is:-

After checking in to our camp site we wandered into town via the marina and enjoyed a quick beer before returning to the campervan for another BBQ feast. This time our meal was accompanied by a bottle of Wooing Tree Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009 ( a present from David & Jess) which was sensational.

Happy campers!
