We had a quick drive around the town before leaving and whilst not exceptional it is quite pretty and has a lovely situation. The lovely lady wife decided that our meagre breakfast needed supplementing with sausage rolls from the local bakery - and very good they were too! On then for a fairly long drive over the Lewis Pass and on to the far north west of the south island. As just about everywhere in New Zealand you are surrounded by wonderful scenery and we have run out of superlatives!
The Lewis Pass was fairly easy driving and on we went to Muchison, which for the benefit of our Yorkshire friends was on the 65 then the 6! At Kohatu we left the main road and headed along the Motueka river to Motueka town where we had booked in for two nights.
As soon as we arrived we felt the need to swim in the wonderful Tasman Bay sea and since it was low tide the sea was quite literally miles out! We drove a few miles to Kaiteriteri which has a much steeper beach and therefore the sea does not disappear into the distance at low tide. It was quite magnificent; blue skies, warm temperatures and a crystal clear sea.
Last time we visited Abel Tasman we had only paid a fleeting visit to Kaiteriteri and this time we couldn't quite understand why. It and its very close neighbour, imaginatively named Little Kaiteriteri, are both absolutely lovely. Little Kaiteriteri in particular has some very expensive houses surrounded by agapanthus and some silk trees and a jacaranda. Motueka is surrounded by fruit farms, apples, raspberries, cherries, boysenberries - you name it and on our way back to the camp site the lovely lady wife purchased half a cherry farm!
Back to the trusty BBQ for a light snack of pork filets, asparagus, mushrooms and hash browns! We have booked a trip around the national park tomorrow so a fairly early start.
