A brilliant sunny day dawned in Akaroa and after a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs flavoured with thyme and oregano from the Hockley estate we walked down the steep track to the town. Akaroa is really lovely, built by the French and still retaining a French ambiance with street names, restaurants and an outdoor cafe culture. We walked all around the small town and aroond to the historic lighthouse which was originally at the entrance to the very large harbour but has been rebuilt just outside of the town. Stunning views everywhere and plenty of people just enjoying life.
We booked a "see the dolphins" cruise and after an excellent lunch of NZ mussels for me and Akaroa salmon for Rosemary we headed of with our all female crew on a very nice catamaran. You never know when embarking on these trips whether you will see much or not but we had been told that there were a substantial number of Hectors Dolphins in Akaroa Harbour and very soon we encountered a pod and they started playing with our boat. Fantastic views of these very beautiful mammals as they swam under and around our boat. They moved so fast that getting a good photo was hard but the views we had were sensational. We saw much more wildlife including fur seals and cormorants but the dolphins really made the day.
After the boat docked we walked back up the steep path to the camp site and the in house BBQ was put to good use again. A wonderful day.
