During a last trip I wrote a piece in appreciation of NZ wines so it's appropriate to update. What can I say but that the wines have been nothing short of sensational with more and more boutique vineyards emerging almost by the day. At Riverstone restaurant they served two Rieslings from the Ostler winery in the Waitaki valley close to the restaurant. The first was a very sophisticated dry riesling to compare with anything we have tasted before and the other an absolutely delicious pudding wine. Such wines from small vineyards all seem to be very good and I'm sure some will reach the UK soon.
In central Otago the Pinot Noirs have always been excellent but they are simply better than ever. David & Jess gave us a present of a bottle of Wooing Tree from the Gibbston Valley which was fantastic and a new favourite of ours; I'll be looking out for it in the UK.
When we visited Tim Wilson's house he served a Gibbston Valley Pinot Gris which was just wonderful and from the wine perspective, perhaps the biggest surprise of this trip is the emergence of Pinot Gris, Riesling and even now Chenin Blanc.
Quite simply the wines we have tasted on this trip have been consistently the best we have tasted anywhere.
