Wednesday 16th January. Off to Hot Water Beach

We left Coromandel town late morning having decided to stay on the eastern coast of the Coromandel Peninsular at Hot Water Beach for our final night in the campervan.

Over the hills with spectacular views on all side we headed south to Whitianga which is a boating resort with lots of restaurants. We enjoyed a light lunch at Salt near the marina and wandered around the town for a while. The wether was slowly improving any by the time we reached our campsite it was sunny are warms. After the mandatory cup of tea we walked down to the beach to sample the hot water. For about 2 hours either side of low tide some hot water springs are exposed just below the surface of the sand. People dig themselves a hole in the sand and wallow in a hot bath. We thought it rather overrated but judging by the numbers digging themselves in we are definitely in the minority.

The beach at Hot Water is considered a fairly dangerous one with a strong current and ebb so swimming is only allowed between the flags on the patrolled area. We ventured in and it was great fun with huge waves and surf. Very tiring though fighting the waves and we relatively soon headed back for the campsite.

BBQ time again and for the last time using our built in device
