Monday 14th January. On to Coromandel

Today was just about our longest journey so we set off bright and early for the drive north east to Coromandel. Well at least we were bright but sadly I cannot say the same for the weather - very heavy rain and a gloomy atmosphere followed us until we reached the eastern side when it brightened up somewhat and at least stopped raining. A pity because again we travelled through some wonderful scenery but did not see it at its best. In particular the Waitomo valley was spectacular and the lovely lady wife was waxing lyrical about tree ferns, silk trees and pohutekawa.

We reached the Coromandel peninsular about 14:00 and travelled up the west side via Thames where the above photo of a silk tree was taken. We settled in to the campsite just outside of town and had the inevitable cup of tea.

Dinner was at the excellent Pepper Tree restaurant in the centre of Coromandel town where we were served by a young New Zealand boy who had just returned from London where he really wished he could have stayed but the work permit ran out. Apparently he had lived in Clapham and worked as a nanny in Chiswick!
