We had the best nights sleep since leaving home and awoke quite early and Ray served our customary cup of tea in bed!
It is much duller today with some rain around which is a shame since yesterday was beautiful, very warm and brilliant sunshine. We headed off to explore the area around Whangarei and Whangarei Heads which is at the entrance to the estuary. All very lovely and tree ferns and agapanthus in abundance.
Shortly after Whangarei Heads we reached Ocean Beach which is stunning even in this weather and we watched some surfers enjoying the surf. By now we were both feeling tired and drove back to the camp site for a rest (not surprising given our 03:30 start yesterday).
The LLW clearly needed a bit more rest so Ray decided to head off and test the hired cycle. Coming in to Whangarei it did not escape my notice that the road was very steeply downhill and of course what goes downhill must cycle uphill later. Upon entering the city I found my way to the quayside which is lined by restaurants and shops - all very attractive. At the end of the quay I found myself on the Hatea Loop which is a walkway/cycle track along the river bank over two bridges and back to Whangarei - excellent. Back in the city (which it is but it feels much more like a small town) I cycled around the streets for a while before tackling the steep hills back to the camp site.
Arriving back exhausted, I found the LLW still asleep! However, a cup of tea was consumed and she quickly awoke. After showers, we plan to have dinner at one of the restaurants on the quayside.
Dinner was indeed at the quay in a restaurants called Love Mussels, and very good it was too.
