Friday 23rd December - we love Russell

Russell is just beautiful and we have had a great time here. This morning we set off on our bikes over the fairly steep hill to Long Beach and whilst the LLW did grumble a bit about the hill climb all was negotiated successfully. Yet another lovely beach in this beautiful area but we did resist the urge to swim as it was quite breezy and fairly rough.

Disaster then stuck on the cycling front! The pedal on Rays bike was clearly coming loose and upon inspection the pedal had sheered from the crank and the screw thread had clearly gone. This is not easily repairable. After returning to Russell we conferred with the only bike hire shop in town where a friend guy confirmed our suspicions and the only solution is to replace the crank arms!  We headed back to the camper van and called the bike hire people. After consultation with the management committee,
Team Jackson decided upon a slight detour tomorrow to KeriKeri where apparently an expert cycle repair man is available complete with the required parts. We will report back.

Lunch was partaken outside our camper van and the site is delightful. We watched two Kiwi families arrive and the stuff that emerged from the cars was astonishing. The tents were assembled in no time but unloading the cars and positioning all of the contents took and age. However, all being accomplished normal service was resumed with all the participants sitting down and consuming several beers.

In the afternoon we walked again into Russell town bought a few essential provisions and had a glass of Pinot Gris on the waterfront.  Walking in the LLW found a number of must photo plants and here are two examples; the first being unidentified, the second being a Jacaranda and the third well that is anyone's guess.

The LLW had decided that we should eat again at the camp site and it was lovely; not just the excellent food but also the quiet site, the attractive surroundings and the setting sun. A pretty good place to dine and of course, as ever, the company and conversation was great.

Tomorrow we need to be up and off early to catch the ferry across to Pahia and then on to KeriKeri. Your intrepid blogger will be back with news of how we can recover from the great cycling disaster of Russell - watch this space.

PS. The Kiwi families are still consuming beers!
