Saturday 5th Wet and cold at Furberg

As foreshadowed (that is an "in joke" for those of you who are in the know about Dolphin Court, Rustington) , the weather today is awful! Cold and wet. The LLW had some serious legal work to do so we rose later than normally, ate a leisurely breakfast and spend most of the morning in our room catching up with work/admin. By late morning the rain had eased somewhat and we headed off for a drive to the Mondsee, stopping for a while in the small but very lovely town of Mondsee. As we wandered around we encountered a wedding at the basilica of St Michael's in the centre of Mondsee.  This church apparently reached international fame because the wedding scene in the movie "Sound of Music" with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer was filmed inside. This is the reason why more than 200.000 people are visiting the church every year and therefore is one of the most photographed churches all over the world. Pope John Paul II upgraded the church to a basilica in 2005. In 2009 the church was reopened after a huge restauration which ended in the title "Austria's monument of the year".

Well now they have had 200,002 visitors this year and that is not counting the Oompah band which accompanied the wedding party who had to stand outside in the cold and wet for several renditions;  anyway it was very entertaining and lovely to see so many in their national costume - a common, and welcome, feature of this part of Austria. .

Before we headed back to base we drove around the Irrsee via the small town of Zell am Moos. Just delightful and Ray was getting very excited about cycling there some day as the small country lanes through emerald green pastures and picture card alpine villages were just perfect for a bicycle trip.

Back at Furberg and the rain had returned! Time to batten down the hatches before an excellent dinner in our hotel. The weather forecast promises some brighter spells (between rain showers) over the next couple of days so we are hopeful that we can resume our round the lake bike challenge!
