Friday 4th Gosau and the Hallstattersee

By now the weather was definitely on a downward turn and the temperature had plummeted. However, Friday morning looked reasonably good and we started early as we had planned a visit to Gosau where we have been many times before. As we passed Bad Ischl the weather had improved dramatically with blue skies and only a few wispy clouds. The last time we visited Gosau we were disappointed to find that the tourist office had  already rented out their only two ebikes hence our early start this day. Sadly the ebike rental is no more since some hirers simply did not return the bikes and the tourist organisation decided that it was just too much hassle.

Undeterred we set off to walk around the Vorderer Gosau See and we were rewarded with the most stunning views and brilliant sunshine.

About 3/4 of the way through our walk we encountered a herd of cattle blocking the rather narrow path with some bemused Austrians looking concerned and wondering what to do. No problem! the plucky Brits strode confidently through the herd and cleared the way for others to follow!!

After a coffee minus the LLW's usual pastry or calorie free cake, we drove off to Obertraun on the Hallstattersee where the sun was still out and the views were as spectacular as ever. A light lunch was accompanied by the second alcoholfrei beer of the holiday and Ray is amazed by how much these beers have improved since the last tasting many years ago and pronounced this Weissbeer as very good!

On our way home from the Hallstattersee, we stopped for a while in Bad Ischl which is a very elegant small town, much favoured by Kaiser Franz Joseph as his summer residence.

Back at Furberg we freshened up for our dinner at Enotecca Barbarossa in Sankt Gilgen which was highly recommended in the various guides. It in famous/infamous for not having a menu and the lady of the house, Ursula, tells you what she has available and there is a choice of two or so for each course. Quite quirky but very good and enjoyable.
