Sunday 15th January - Market and Cycling

We enjoyed watching La La Land at the Paradiso Cinema which turned out to be quite an experience. Paradiso is certainly quirky and reminded us a little of New Park in Chichester. The seating was quite something with couches, reclining armchairs and probably several other types of seats. Customers are encouraged to purchase wine, coffee etc before moving in to the auditorium and whilst we did not do so, most others seemed to. There was a half time interval and customers were encouraged to refuel again including some freshly baked cookies which we were unable to resist. The audience was certainly multi national with a large number of gap year kids.

Overall a very pleasant experience and all were made very welcome.

First call on Sunday morning was the market close to the centre of Wanaka which featured lots of crafts and plenty of stalls selling cakes and other culinary goodies. One was selling something I had not come across before, Hungarian Chimney Cakes which were cylindrical and coated with various calorie free sauces. Hungarian cakes in NZ; what a small world we live in.

Without incurring too much damage to the holiday budget, we returned to Edgewater to change into cycling gear and attempt the longish ride along the bay, around Eely Point (favourite wind surfing spot for David Dixon), Beacon Point and down the Clutha River towards Albert Town. The conditions were tricky with a very strong wind, but sunny and very clear.

It was all very lovely and we got very close to Albert Town before turning around and retracing our steps. Probably about 15 miles in total and the LLW was very pleased with herself having completed the ride which was not easy with a very variable surface, narrow tracks along the Clutha River and a number of short but steep climbs.

The LLW produced one of her usual masterpieces for dinner, Rib Eye Steak, Mange Tout, Green Beans and Sauted potatoes accompanied by an excellent Wooing Tree Pinot Noir. White cherries to follow and that was perfect!

We had a short walk after dinner and marvelled at the views across the lake.  Warm but windy and with the clarity that NZ specialises in.

The technology now came into play and we used the Tivoli radio/bluetooth speaker to play some favourites from my iPhone including right now John Storey's "Radiohead".
