A brilliantly clear morning and we had decided to walk the 3 miles back to Pete's house where David, Jess and Isla are staying as we needed to pick up the car which was left there last night (too much very good NZ red wine!) There was clearly some new snow on the mountain tops and the views were lovely. We arrived in good time and after a few minutes rest we used FaceTime to talk to Hilton, Anne, Helen and Rich in the lakes (Rosie was in bed) . All were on good form.
Next stop? Yes you have guessed it - coffee. We drove the car down to the town and secured a table at one of the many coffee shops in Wanaka (this is not easy and they are always very busy and it occurred to me that being in the coffee business in NZ and particularly Wanaka must be a very profitable business). David and Isla joined us a few minutes later on David's bike and then Jess arrived on hers. As you can see Isla was, of course, the centre of attention and here she is showing Rosemary the various animals depicted on her cycling helmet. The family are now off to Lake Tekapo for an overnight stay in their camper van before returning to Sumner, just outside of Christchurch, so we said our farewells and look forward to meeting up again next time we are in Wanaka.
It was now time for a cycle ride and we drove back to Edgewater where we picked up the bikes. The LLW was a bit put out when her favourite bike had already been rented but after a bit of a fuss about frame sizes and seat height we were soon underway. We had decided to go further along the Glendhu Bay trail and as you can see the views across the lake were awesome.
This turned out to be a fairly tough mountain bike trail with several short but very steep and stony climbs. The LLW performed brilliantly and certainly completed many more difficult climbs than she has ever done before. Coming back was slightly easier because we had the wind behind us and the uphill gradients seemed more gradual in this direction. A short rest at Waterfall Creek and then we cycled into town for a few provisions. However, before anything else could be done, the LLW decreed that an ice cream was an absolute necessity!
Back then to Edgewater and by then we were both very tired - time for dinner
