The South Island

On our last night in Wellington (which is described as a “cool capital”) we had a very nice French meal at Le Metropolitan and ended up talking to some very pleasant Australian ladies (3) and one British man who now live in Sydney.
We woke up early to make the ferry which is 3 hours. The last hour involves sailing through what seems like the very narrow Queen Charlotte and Marlborough Sounds which are stunning, even when the sun is not shining. We then picked up another car and headed for Nelson via the coast (scenic) road. Scenic it was – there was an amazing view of the mountains and the sea around every corner. After stopping for a pie (very popular in Australia and NZ) we arrived at Abel Tasman at about 4.00. We are staying in a lovely complex just outside the Abel Tasman National Park and very near a stunning beach (although the tide was a little far out for sensible swimming)
Tomorrow we will be kayaking, hopefully seeing seal pups and walking through the national park, while being ferried there and back by water taxi.
