I have spent many years at not inconsiderable cost trying to grow a good display of agapanthus without a lot of success.
I arrive in New Zealand and there they are as if they were going out of fashion. Indeed, perhaps they are because we understand that the Garden Centres either do not or are not allowed to sell them now as they are regarded as a weed. Well, Agathas (as we have called them on the trip) are the most stunning weed I have ever seen. They appear in most municipal plantings and fill, en masse, many a garden. They line the underneath of trees leading up to farms and houses in the country. Blue, white, they are just stunning in the New Zealand sunshine. Long may they last. Clearly they belong here and not in Rackham and maybe that is the lesson I should take from this trip.
