Friday
16th September
We
awoke at the unearthly hour of 02:45 and headed off to Gatwick in
heavy rain but luckily very light traffic.
Given
the time we were allowed we were surprised to be told at the bag drop
that we were actually late for our flight and were given priority to
drop off the bags. Security was not too slow and we arrived at the
gate in reasonable time to find a long queue apparently caused by the
lack of airport staff to open the aircraft door! After about 15
minutes this was sorted and we walked out over the tarmac in pouring
rain so were soaked when we managed to get on board!
The
flight was very good and we continue to be impressed by easyJet and
in particular their new seats. These appear to be thin and dare I say
flimsy. However, they are very comfortable and the thinness means
extra leg room.
After
the brief delay leaving Gatwick we were slightly early arriving in
Athens and disembarked the aircraft into searing 33C+ heat. The metro
to Syntagma Square was quick and reasonably comfortable. A 10 minute
walk and we arrived at Hapimag Athens which is ideally situated on
the edge of the famous Plaka district just below the Acropolis. Even
though we arrived well ahead of the official checking in time, our
room was ready and we unpacked in air conditioned luxury!
Off
for a lunch in Plaka and then back for a rest at the apartment.
